In a recent podcast, Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey said he is done trash talking quarterbacks. Afterward, we all cried.
Please, for the love of the NFL Gods, say it isn’t so, Jalen Ramsey.
Ramsey, the fiery Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback who made a name for himself by trash talking every single quarterback in the NFL, went on a recent podcast with Adam Schefter and put a shock in the football world.
“I’m not going to do this again,” he told Schefter, who, like us, was completely shocked at what he just heard. So, let me break it down for you: Ramsey has “retired” from trash-talking QB’s.
Now, the world can cry.
In one way we should be happy for Ramsey. A year ago, he basically called every quarterback the Jaguars were going to face last season “trash,” despite the fact that his own team had a similar type of quarterback in Blake Bortles.
He did have some positives to share on Schefter’s podcast about his new quarterback, Nick Foles, however.
“But probably the quarterback I’m most excited about is Nick Foles. I don’t have to play against him, of course. He is my teammate. He is a great teammate. The interactions we’ve had have been great. Great man, great player as well. Has nothing to prove to anybody. He’s a Super Bowl champion — Super Bowl MVP. So I hope he comes out here and plays free [and] knows he has the support of everybody.”
While we were all pretty amused by Ramsey’s analyst of the quarterbacks the Jaguars would face in an otherwise disastrous 2018 season, some chided the interview as being childish and immature. With Ramsey declaring himself “done” trash-talking quarterbacks, it shows a new level of maturity for the corner that we can all be proud of.
On the other hand, however, it’s sad that one of the NFL’s most prolific trash-talkers is hanging up his words for good. When done right, trash-talking can be an essential part of the game, and in an era where rivals don’t really seem like “rivals” anymore, it was refreshing to see a player take no prisoners, both on the field and in the media.
So, yeah, we have mixed feelings about Ramsey retiring from the trash-talking world. While it’s awesome to see him mature, it’s sad that we’ll have less entertaining quotes to cover from one of the NFL’s more colorful players.
