Twitter melts down over Derwin James injury

Los Angeles Chargers superstar safety Derwin James suffered a fracture in his right foot and will be out for a significant amount of time. And Twitter was in a state of shock.

Injuries in August before the start of the NFL season can have a devastating effect on a franchise, as Jordy Nelson’s ACL tear in 2015 exemplifies. The Los Angeles Chargers have long had rotten luck with injuries, and after learning that Keenan Allen would miss the rest of the preseason, fans also heard news of a major injury to superstar safety Derwin James.

According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, James has a stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal. Head coach Anthony Lynn hasn’t ruled out surgery or the injured reserve for James, who suffered the injury at practice on Thursday.

This is a huge injury for James, who is one of the best all-around defenders in the NFL. He can line up anywhere defensively, provide elite coverage, come up and bump running backs, and make plays on the ball. He’ll be sorely missed by the Chargers for however long he’s out, and the team will look for Adrian Phillips to step up alongside promising rookie Nasir Adderley.

Chargers fans, meanwhile, are having a meltdown, and understandably so. James is an All-Pro player whose skill-set is perhaps the most difficult to replace at the position.

Others are so stressed out that they can’t see the Chargers competing with the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West crown after this injury.

As this Chargers fan says, tough injuries are all too common for this loyal, but tortured, fanbase.

And there are plenty of well wishes for James, who will surely be better than ever once he’s healed up.

Of course, some are going further than hoping for the best and are offering their own body parts.

Hopefully James can return to the Chargers at some point this season, and all eyes will be glued on his status. Here’s to wishing James the best in his recovery, and here’s to wishing the likes of Phillips and Adderley to have strong starts to the season to help the Chargers defense.
