Eric Weddle suffers bloody, gruesome injury

The gruesome injury Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle suffered on Sunday shows just how brutal football can be.

Weddle, who was one of the Rams’ biggest offseason acquisitions, had to be carted off the field against the Carolina Panthers after sustaining a truly horrific head injury. After diving to try to tackle low on Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers back hurdled over Weddle, taking a knee to the head.

The Rams medical staff had to cart Weddle off the field and when he was loaded onto the cart, we saw how much blood Weddle had on his jersey. The Rams wrapped towels around his head to stop the bleeding, and he appeared to be conscious as he was carted off.

The team later announced that Weddle suffered a head laceration and was doubtful to return to the game, though the didn’t specify that he had a concussion. That may be a bit of good news out of a truly scary situation.

In trying to bolster their secondary, the Rams went out and picked up the 34-year-old safety in free agency this offseason, and Weddle was slated to make a huge impact on a Rams defense that lost some key pieces from their NFC Championship squad a season ago.

Hopefully, the Rams won’t be without the hard-hitting Weddle for long, though time will tell if he will be ready for their home opener against the New Orleans Saints next Sunday, a game that will be much-anticipated giving the circumstances that surrounded the ending of the NFC Championship Game.

Marqui Christian replaced Weddle for (likely) the rest of their game against Carolina.
