Gardner Minshew is the hero we all need

The legend of Gardner Minshew is one of the biggest storylines to watch in the early NFL season, as the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback is ready to make his first career start against the Houston Texans.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t really stand a chance in Week 1 against reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, sixth-round rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew did his best to make things interesting.

Minshew entered the game after starting quarterback Nick Foles broke his collarbone, and he proceeded to carve up the Chiefs defense. Using the likes of DJ Chark, Minshew completed 22-of-25 passes for 275 yards in a performance that surely made his college coach Mike Leach proud.

Surely, Leach will be even prouder to know that Minshew wore nothing but a jockstrap in the locker room while stretching before a pivotal AFC South game against the Houston Texans.

That is the unbridled confidence of a legend. And with a mustache like Minshew’s, why wouldn’t he be confident?

The Jaguars and Texans are two of the favorites to win the AFC South, so this Week 2 game could have major implications for the AFC playoff picture in December. Houston are the favorites after winning the division last season, but after Bill O’Brien blundered the game away against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, the Jaguars and their defense have hope.

Minshew will have to face Houston without top receiver Marqise Lee, but judging by his accuracy in Week 1 and his insane pre-game confidence, the man seems entirely capable of giving the Jaguars more than a chance.

Clearly, Minshew has far more confidence than the average late-round rookie. Maybe it’s the jockstrap. Maybe it’s the ‘stache. Maybe it’s the fact that he was fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting last season. Whatever the case, O’Brien and the Texans should be nervous while they quietly admire Minshew’s fashion sense.
