Patrick Mahomes injury: 5 fantasy football waiver wire replacements

With Patrick Mahomes likely out at least three weeks, who could his fantasy football owners look to replace him with off the waiver wire?

As he laid on the field after converting a first down on a quarterback sneak Thursday night, Kansas City Chiefs’ fans and Patrick Mahomes’ fantasy owners held their breath. He was immediately declared out with a right knee injury, and multiple subsequent reports said he suffered a dislocated knee cap. Pictures from the moment seem to show a Chiefs trainer putting Mahomes’ knee cap back into place.

Results of an MRI on Friday will tell the tale in full, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and ESPN’s Adam Schefter have reported Mahomes will miss at least three weeks.

There’s no easy way to replace Mahomes, the fourth-highest scoring quarterback in ESPN fantasy leagues with the rest of Week 7 to go.

Mahomes should be able to be stashed on a fantasy roster in an IR spot, pending what his exact diagnosis is. But in the teeth of bye weeks, even if he only misses three games his fantasy owners will have to add someone to fill the void (if only symbolically).

For Mahomes’ fantasy owners, the ship has sailed on Week 7 in regard to replacing him in a lineup. But going forward, here are five replacements who can be found on the waiver wire.

5. Daniel Jones, New York Giants

Jones had a great game in his first NFL start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (336 passing yards, four total touchdowns, 34.24 fantasy points-Yahoo! scoring). Since then he’s not been nearly as good, with less combined fantasy points over his last three games (34.02) and no more than 225 passing yards in any of those games. Tough matchups in Week 5 (Minnesota Vikings) and Week 6 (New England Patriots) should be noted.

After a great Week 7 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, who have allowed the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks, Jones gets the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets from Week 8-Week 10. The Lion and Jets are middle of the pack in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks, while the Cowboys have allowed the sixth-fewest fantasy points to the position.

The good news for Jones going forward is the return of running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and tight end Evan Engram (knee) this week. His debut will probably be as good as it gets in terms of fantasy production, but his running ability and the return of his two best weapons raises the floor.
