Breshad Perriman offers big fantasy upside in championship weekend

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a tough matchup Saturday vs. the Houston Texans, but will wide receiver Breshad Perriman be a reason you win in fantasy?

Fantasy football league championships will be decided this weekend, as all 16 games will be played out of the next few days. While there wasn’t Thursday Night Football this week, keep in mind that six teams will be playing on Saturday, including Breshad Perriman’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who host the Houston Texans in the early afternoon window.

The Fantasy Footballers were asked in a mailbag segment on Wednesday if it was better to play Perriman vs. the Texans or Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp vs. the San Francisco 49ers. While Andy Holloway and Jason Moore were split on the decision, they do believe that Perriman’s potential upside as a receiver is certainly an intriguing potential play this week.

Kupp, who is usually a more consistent receiver than Perriman, has dealt with injuries in the last two years. While Perriman tends to be more miss than hit, the reason he’s such an interesting play this week is who his starting quarterback is in Jameis Winston. With Winston being a high-volume thrower, that could mean for more catches, yards and touchdowns going Perriman’s way.

Keep in mind that Tampa Bay’s No. 2 wide receiving option in Chris Godwin succumbed to a hamstring injury in Week 15’s road win vs. the Detroit Lions. Tampa Bay still has a perennial Pro Bowler in the No. 1 spot in Mike Evans, but look for Perriman to get some extra looks with Godwin being out for the rest of the season.

Yes, the sheer amount of volume that might go Perriman’s way could be intriguing, but it’s not like the Texans are a great matchup for the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay doesn’t offer much of a home-field advantage for the Buccaneers, who have been eliminated from playoff contention yet again. Houston still leads the AFC South and has every reason to keep playing hard going forward.

That being said, Houston is consistently inconsistent as a football team. The Texans play up to good competition but have suffered too many boneheaded losses this season for us to really think they can contend for the Super Bowl. We know that Winston will want to throw the ball all day Saturday, so look for a guy like Perriman to be the beneficiary of that in fantasy football.
