New York Jets free agency 2020: Top 5 targets

The New York Jets improved their record by three games in 2019, and these five players could help them get significantly better in 2020.

The dynasty may be dying in New England, which should open up the AFC East for the rest of the division. While the Buffalo Bills are positioned to get the first crack at the throne, don’t sleep on the New York Jets, who finished the season strong by going 6-2 in the second half.

The Jets dug themselves a deep hole with a 1-7 start, but they were ravaged by injuries, losing multiple key players for extended stretches of time. With better health, the Jets should be a bigger threat next season.

There are also several areas the Jets could stand to improve, so expect General Manager Joe Douglas to be active in the free agent market. Let’s take a look at what some of the Jets’ top targets could be when the frenzy starts in March.

5. G Joe Thuney

The top priority for the Jets in free agency is to improve their offensive line, which couldn’t open holes for Le’Veon Bell or protect Sam Darnold very well. The Jets could use multiple starters along the line, and fortunately the free agent market has several attractive options along the interior.

One move the Jets could pursue is to sign the emerging Thuney, who is just 27 years old and was Second-Team All-Pro in 2019. Thuney may be too expensive for the Patriots, who have a number of key free agents to try to retain, so the Jets could snag a quality lineman while weakening their arch rival, killing two birds with one stone.
