New York Giants, NFL Draft

Giants are open to drafting Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert

The New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones in the first round last year but if Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert is available, they could be interested.

Normally a team that drafted a quarterback in the first round wouldn’t take a quarterback in the first round one year later.

It happened with the Arizona Cardinals last year when they moved on from Josh Rosen to take Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick. And it could happen with the New York Giants who are reportedly open to the idea of drafting either Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa or Oregon’s Justin Herbert in the 2020 NFL Draft one year after taking Daniel Jones with the No. 4 overall pick.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said the team is open for business to move back from the No. 4 pick and was non-committal when it came to saying Jones is the team’s franchise quarterback.

Even further, Gettleman left the door wide open the team could draft a quarterback in the first round. LSU’s Joe Burrow is expected to be the No. 1 pick of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Detroit Lions could be in the market for a quarterback at No. 3 or they could be a prime trade destination for teams like the Miami Dolphins (No. 5), San Diego Chargers (No. 6) and perhaps even the Carolina Panthers (No. 13) despite their commitment to Cam Newton.

If the Giants stay at No. 4 and Tua or Herbert is the highest-ranked player on the board, would the Giants take them?

The odds of this are slim.

It would be an admission that the Jones pick was a failure, which would be odd after throwing 24 touchdowns, 3,027 yards and completing 61.9 percent of his passes as a rookie. The pick was criticized at the time, but it wasn’t the type of unmitigated disaster you sever all ties with after one year.

The Giants drafting Tua or Herbert would not make football sense. The Giants are more likely to draft the highest-ranked player on their board who isn’t a quarterback or running back. Those are the only two positions on the Giants that are locked with Jones and Saquon Barkley written in pen on the depth charts.

Trying to predict what Gettleman will do is a fool’s errand, but he wouldn’t be that foolish to draft Tua or Herbert, or any quarterback with a high pick this year.
