New York Giants head coach Joe Judge and general manager Dave Gettleman aren’t giving Daniel Jones any promises.
The New York Giants won’t say Daniel Jones is their starting quarterback. Seriously.
The sixth-overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season. However, while he is considered Eli Manning’s replacement, Jones has yet to fully prove himself. In 12 starts, he completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns. Along the way, Jones became the first rookie to notch four touchdown passes with no interceptions in three games.
As for the team’s new head coach, Joe Judge is hoping to make good impressions. He replaces Pat Shurmur, who served as the coach for two seasons until he was fired after the 2019 season.
Judge will look to turn the ship around as he takes over a Giants team who made the playoffs once since winning Super Bowl XLVI. He has some pieces to work with, but he hasn’t made any commitments on starters, particularly at quarterback.
Judge has yet to name any Giants player by name, including Jones and teammate Saquon Barkley. He has his reasons, especially since he comes from the school of Bill Belichick, where Judge served as a special teams assistant before becoming the coordinator.
Hopefully, his scheme and program will be a benefit for Jones, if he’s the starter.
Meanwhile, general manager David Gettleman has the fourth pick of the upcoming NFL Draft. He insists the team is going to take the best player available. Some of those players he’s considering include quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa.
Gettleman must do anything to give Jones security and space to do his work on the field. It should be pointed out that Jones was sacked an absurd 38 times. With no protection, this should be a sign for the Giants to draft an offensive tackle, something Gettleman talked about as a possibility during his media access in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
