Packers must be wary of Josh McDaniels as head coach candidate

Josh McDaniels would be an intriguing option for next head coach of the Green Bay Packers, but can they really trust him?

With Mike McCarthy fired, a big topic of discussion in the NFL right now is who will assume the throne as head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

Various names have been tossed around in the conversation, with one of those names being Josh McDaniels, the current offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots and the No. 1 sidekick to Bill Belichick.

It’s in the back of his mind right now as the Patriots push toward the playoffs, but McDaniels appears to be very open to the idea of being a head coach in the NFL once again.

“If that’s in the cards for me, then that’s great,” McDaniels said, via NESN.com. “I’ve said that before. But again, I’m not worried about that right now.”

McDaniels is certainly worthy of consideration for the head coaching vacancy; he’s an offensive football wizard, and his resume in New England working under Belichick speaks wonders. Nevertheless, the Packers would be wise to tread lightly when it comes to McDaniels.

He’s proven to be a little unpredictable, and maybe even a little untrustworthy.

After the Patriots lost in Super Bowl LII last February, McDaniels was named the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts — only to step down from the position on the very same day and remain in his same role with the Patriots.

In typical New England fashion, it was a very controversial move; one that sparked all kinds of negative backlash and essentially made him a villain in Colts territory. It was such a bad look on McDaniels that even his longtime agent, Bob LaMonte, stopped representing him.

After a move like that, could a team really feel comfortable about potentially hiring McDaniels without worrying that he might once again choose his loyalty to Belichick over running his own team? It’s something they would at least have to consider.

McDaniels definitely knows all about football, and he could accomplish big things in Green Bay, especially with a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers.

But you always want to be able to trust your head coach, and after what went down with the Colts, the only people that should trust McDaniels are Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
