Todd McShay seems to want a job in the Jets front office

The New York Jets have hired a new general manager, and ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay seems to want a job in the organization.

After at least the appearance of a search, the New York Jets have landed on the immediate favorite by hiring Joe Douglas as their new general manager. As Douglas shapes a front office staff, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said he is under consideration for a job in the organization, according to ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini.

“Joe is considering multiple options and I’m one of the options,” Cimini reports McShay said.

After the Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan, a report surfaced suggesting NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah was being considered for a job with the team. Jeremiah denied he was ever contacted. A separate report pointed to the team seeking input from NFL Network insider Peter Schrager as they considered candidates to replace Maccagnan.

If nothing else, it’s clear the Jets are trying to go outside the box for perspectives on how to run the organization. With a playoff drought dating back to 2010, a change of thinking can only help.

Also notable is that McShay and Douglas were teammates for two years at the University of Richmond, so they’ve known each other for years.

Alongside Mel Kiper Jr., McShay has become a prominent draft analyst for ESPN. He also works on college football sidelines during the season, which allows him to see incoming draft prospects up close on a weekly basis and talk to coaches.

McShay may just be “one of the options” Douglas is considering for positions with the Jets. He also would hardly be the first media member to make the jump to a team’s front office.

But it appears McShay offered information to Cimini regarding the possibility he’ll wind up working for the Jets, unprompted. Perhaps his current contract at ESPN is winding down and he’s trying a bit of a leverage play. Or perhaps he is headed to the NFL at the request of an old friend.
