Cautious Colts don’t want Andrew Luck to follow Kevin Durant’s path

The Colts aren’t afraid Andrew Luck is going to leave to form a super team somewhere else, but they still don’t want him to be like Kevin Durant.

NFL teams don’t typically keep a close eye on the NBA when it comes to how to treat their injured players, but the Colts learned a valuable lesson from the Golden State Warriors this year. They saw how rushing Kevin Durant back from a calf strain contributed to the talented wing suffering a torn Achilles in his first game back. The Colts are not going to take the same risk with their franchise quarterback.

As such, Luck wasn’t on the field with his teammates when training camp begins. Team officials claim they’ll limit Luck’s activities for the first 7-10 days of camp. The Colts’ medical staff hopes that by giving Luck that extra time off it will allow him to fully recover from the calf injury that’s plagued him since minicamp.

Head coach Frank Reich says he didn’t discuss what happened with Durant directly with GM Chris Ballard, but he did believe it was an unspoken agreement between the two franchise leaders. It shouldn’t be any surprise that the two are in lock step. The synergy between Ballard and Reich is a big reason the Colts exceeded expectations in 2018.

Even aside from what happened to Durant in the NBA postseason, it’s highly unlikely the Colts were going to rush Luck onto the practice field this month. The franchise knows what life is like without their Pro Bowl signal caller all too well. Just 12 months ago, there were real concerns about whether Luck would every play football at a high level again. Fortunately for fans in Indianapolis, their star’s calf injuries are mild in comparison to his previous arm issues.

If all goes according to plan, Luck’s groin will be a non-issue for he and his teammates in just a few weeks. Warriors fans and Durant wish they could say the same. Rushing Durant back to the court may have cost Golden State another NBA title and the chance to lock up their star wing for the long haul. The Colts aren’t going to take any chances with their franchise’s biggest star.
