Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was ruthlessly honest in his interview with GQ, stating he was shocked when the New York Giants selected Daniel Jones.
Baker Mayfield has plenty to say. This time, Daniel Jones was brought into the conversation.
Mayfield, entering his second season with the Browns, did a wide-ranging interview with GQ published on Tuesday morning. In the piece, Mayfield had harsh criticism for the New York Giants, who selected the University of Duke product with the No. 6 overall pick.
“I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones. Blows my mind. … Some people overthink it,” Mayfield says. “That’s where people go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win.”
Frankly, Mayfield shares the opinion of many. Jones was taken too high. Still, to single out Jones’ win-loss record in college is the wrong way to go about the point. Patrick Mahomes also had a losing record in college. So did John Elway. If Mayfield had played at Duke instead of Oklahoma, there’s a fair chance he would have filled up the loss column as well.
Mayfield has been incredibly vocal since entering the league as the first-overall selection in 2018. This offseason alone, Mayfield has gotten into a feud with FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd and taken considerable shots at Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger, stating “he doesn’t like me, and I hope he knows I don’t like him either.”
Mayfield’s shoot-from-the-hip bravado will work out fine in Cleveland if the Browns win early and often. If not, it’ll be interesting to see the remarks going the other direction.
