Green Bay Packers trade Reggie Gilbert to Tennessee Titans

Former undrafted free agent Reggie Gilbert heads to his second NFL home after the Green Bay Packers traded him to the Tennessee Titans.

As teams throughout the NFL prepare for roster cuts, some players on the fringe may be subject to trades.

Linebacker Reggie Gilbert now finds himself a member of a new franchise:

Trimming the roster down to 53 players with the input of new head coach Matt LaFleur, the Green Bay Packers are exchanging their third-year linebacker for a seventh-round pick. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans will gain some talent at the EDGE position.

Entering the league as an undrafted rookie free agent, Gilbert was coming off of a productive four-year career at the University of Arizona. He recorded 14 sacks in college and also added 144 tackles, with 28 of them being for a loss.

Gilbert’s rookie season was rather uneventful, as his final stat line was two tackles and a sack in a pair of games played. The following season, though, the former Wildcat flashed some of the potential that caused the Packers’ front office to take a chance on him.

Last season, Gilbert played in all 16 games for the Packers. He had 38 tackles on the season, with four of them being good for negative yardage. Adding in 2.5 sacks, 8 quarterback hits and a pair of passes defended, he proved he could be productive in a limited role.

While it remains to be seen what role Gilbert will play with his new team in Tennessee, defensive coordinator Dean Pees certainly can’t be disappointed with the move. The Titans were tied for 16th in the league in sacks a year ago, sitting right in the middle of the pack.

Anything Gilbert can offer in terms of pass-rushing ability or overall production is a welcomed addition. Giving up just a seventh-round draft pick, the value returned for it could turn out to be significant.
