After being released by the Buffalo Bills early on Saturday, LeSean McCoy reunites with former head coach Andy Reid by the end of the day.
The NFL’s yearly cutdown to 53-man rosters brings a lot of action stuffed into a short period of time. For running back LeSean McCoy, that statement couldn’t ring truer.
A victim of a surprise cut by the Buffalo Bills earlier in the day, McCoy’s status among unemployed rushers didn’t last very long. He’s quickly found a new home in Kansas City. Reuniting with Andy Reid, who coached McCoy in Philadelphia, the two will now be working together again.
McCoy’s best season as a professional came in 2013 under Reid. Leading the league in carries (314), rushing yards (1,607) and yards per game (100.4), the former Pittsburgh Panther was once one of the best running backs in the entire league.
The 31-year old McCoy is a six-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro. Posting a season with at least 1,000 rushing yards as recently as 2017, that production saw a steep dropoff the following season. In 2018 with the Bills, McCoy rushed for a career-low 3.2 yards per attempt and scored just a trio of touchdowns in 13 starts.
Dealing with a myriad of injuries over the last few seasons, both wear-and-tear and age may be catching up to McCoy. Playing in a backfield consisting of Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson, it remains to be seen exactly what role he will play in Kansas City’s high-powered offense.
Finishing 16th in the league in total rushing yards a season ago, McCoy serves as a welcomed addition to one of the most dynamic units in the league. Reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes now has another weapon to play with as the 2019 regular season approaches.
