Bears season is over if they get buried by Carson Wentz and the Eagles

The Chicago Bears are in danger of falling out of the playoff hunt as the team travels to take on Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chicago Bears are quickly approaching disaster.

Fans have been calling for Mitchell Trubisky to be benched for weeks, the team is 3-4, and Sunday’s loss came on a missed field goal. A loss this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles all but ends the team’s chances of returning to the postseason.

The season would essentially be over after eight games.

The NFC playoff picture is top-heavy right now. Three division leaders have at least seven wins, including the 7-1 Green Bay Packers in the NFC North, and the fifth and sixth seeds both have 6-2 records. The only division up for the taking is the NFC East, which looks like it will hold the No. 4 seed in January.

That is good news for Carson Wentz and the Eagles. The 4-4 squad is one loss behind the 4-3 Dallas Cowboys and are right in the heart of the playoff hunt. As expected, the Eagles enter as favorites over the Bears.

A loss won’t end the playoff hopes for the Eagles at 4-5. The NFC East is well within reach and a record of 8-8 or 9-7 could be enough to get that No. 4 overall seed.

The same is not true for the Bears. The team is dead last in the NFC North and is currently the No. 12 overall seed. Yet it is early so realistically the Bears could lose and still pull off a string of wins to end the year.

The schedule is the problem as the Bears play teams with winning records nearly every week. The outlier is a game against the New York Giants. Even the 3-3-1 Detroit Lions are a tough matchup for a Bears team struggling to score points.

That is the most frustrating thing for Bears fans. The defense is allowing just over 17 points per game. That is fantastic. Meanwhile, the offense averages just over 18 per game.

A lot of the blame falls on Trubisky, though he was out for one of the team’s losses. He doesn’t turn it over much, with only three interceptions, but the team just has struggle scoring with him at quarterback. His five touchdowns don’t scream “trade up for me.”

The Bears did not go out and make a deal for a quarterback before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Guys like Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, and Teddy Bridgewater could have all been potential targets. But at this point it may just be wise to hold onto assets and ride it out with Trubisky. If things go too far south the team will be picking within the first half of the first round.

To be fair to Trubisky, better clock management by Matt Nagy, along with a made kick, and the Bears are 4-3.

The good news for Bears fans is that the defense is still dominant. This Sunday’s game will be close and the Bears will be in a position to win. It all comes down to whether Trubisky can lead his offense and prove that he deserved to be taken No. 2 overall in 2017.

If he fails, the Bears may need to make a similar trade on draft day in 2020.
