Devin Singletary: Will he be a top-15 running back in 2020?

Devin Singletary had a solid rookie year with the Buffalo Bills, but will he emerge as a top-15 running back in fantasy football in his second season?

Though he didn’t get a ton of touches in his rookie campaign out of Florida Atlantic, Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary did enough in The Fantasy Footballers‘ eyes for them to believe he can be an RB15 in fantasy next season. Andy Holloway pointed out that from Weeks 7 through 16, Singletary was RB16, despite only having four combined touchdowns all year.

Singletary had 775 rushing yards on only 151 attempts in 2019, going for only two rushing touchdowns. However, he did have 29 catches for an additional 194 yards for two touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield. For a guy to have nearly 1,000 yards from scrimmage in his rookie season and not be a featured back, it signifies he might be in for a breakout season in year two.

Mike Wright brought up two interesting points for why Singletary can make the leap into RB15 territory next season. Singletary averaged one touchdown for every 75.5 touches. That is an outrageous number and one we should expect will dip down to a more reasonable amount in 2020. He is also adept at pulling off big runs, having seven plays of over 20 yards on the ground.

Wright looks at Singletary in the same vein of Kareem Hunt as a young player. Hunt was a mid-round pick out of a Group of 5 school in Toledo and didn’t blow people away at the scouting combine. However, his productivity as a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs was undeniable. While Hunt was better as a rookie than Singletary, he could be as impactful as a fantasy player.

The guys look at RB15 status as a fair threshold to gauge Singletary entering next season. Wright is affirmative Singletary is a top-20 running back in fantasy, a lock to be a good team’s RB2 and a player who should be coming off draft boards in August in the third round. But will he get enough touchdowns to consistently be an RB15 in the league? That remains to be seen.

Ultimately, Singletary will play a big factor in the Bills’ offense again next year, likely as the featured back. His big-play ability and consistencies as a pass-catcher will play a big part in this. However, until he can find pay dirt with greater regularity, Singletary will stay closer to RB20 status than RB15 status.
