Tight end Mike Gesicki is entering his third year in the league in 2020. Is he poised for a fantasy football breakout with this year’s Miami Dolphins?
Mike Gesicki was taken in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins out of Penn State. While he hasn’t been the dynamic pass catcher he was in the Big Ten, Gesicki did have a solid second season with the Dolphins, as he had 51 catches for 570 yards and five touchdowns. Is Miami’s tight end poised for a breakout season in 2020?
The Fantasy Footballers had their doubts about Gesicki coming out of college, mostly because he was such a raw prospect and how he was used in Happy Valley wasn’t going to be how he was used at the NFL level. After looking like a bust during the better part of his first two years in the league, Gesicki really came on towards the end of last year when opportunity arose.

Preston Williams succumbed to injury, which then gave way to Gesicki being a favorite target of Ryan Fitzpatrick down the stretch. Fitzpatrick throws a lot of interceptions, but he’ll make players who were busts like DeVante Parker and turn them into fantasy football stars. So what are the chances Gesicki continues to trend up in 2020?
Mike Wright suggests that Gesicki was held back in Adam Gase’s Dolphins offense as a rookie. It’s weird because Gase was in the war room when Miami used a second-round pick on the guy in 2018. With Chan Gailey coming in, who had a phenomenal year with Fitzpatrick as his quarterback on the 2015 New York Jets, this could be the breakout season we were hoping for out of Gesicki.
Entering the heart of the offseason, Gesicki projects as a low-end TE1 in most fantasy leagues. He has shown he can be a volume receiver as a tight end, as well as be a major contributor in the red zone with his ability to catch touchdowns. Overall, the guys compare him favorably to Mike Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens entering next season. So should we expect big-time production?
Ultimately, it’s hard to trust the Dolphins’ offense year-to-year, which has really been the case since Dan Marino retired over two decades ago. If Fitzpatrick is still starting at quarterback for Miami, we should expect Gesicki to continue to play well. Should Fitzpatrick be pulled in favor of a rookie Miami takes in the first-round this spring, there are no guarantees for what could happen.
