Joe Burrow and A.J. Green will be a fun tandem for Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals could have Joe Burrow throwing the ball to A.J. Green in 2020. Let’s take a minute and appreciate how awesome this tandem could be.

Joe Burrow and A.J. Green are about to be Cincinnati Bengals teammates, and it’s going to be awesome.

Cincinnati has long been rumored to take the 2019 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in this spring’s draft. Though Green didn’t play a snap for the Bengals last year, it is expected he’ll return to the Queen City, whether that’s on a long-term deal or reluctantly on the franchise tag. Let’s take a few minutes to get fired up about this potential aerial assault tandem.

Burrow is cool with playing for the downtrodden AFC North team, but he made it perfectly clear on how he feels about having a perennial Pro Bowl receiver like Green back in the mix. Even though he had a record-setting season at LSU, Burrow knows he can’t bring Cincinnati out of the AFC basement without his NFL version of Ja’Marr Chase. Green can certainly be that for him.

With his draft class teammate Andy Dalton throwing to him during the first eight years out of Georgia, Green was on the fast track to Canton as a seven-time Pro Bowler. Frankly, he’s poised to be at least the second Bengal to make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after legendary left tackle Anthony Muñoz. Ken Anderson and Andrew Whitworth might beat him to it, though.

Green might be entering his age-32 season, but he has shown to be a dominant No. 1 receiver at all levels. He caught balls from the likes of Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray in college, as well as Dalton in Cincinnati for eight seasons. His complete receiving game will make things easier for Burrow during his first year in the NFL. Head coach Zac Taylor will certainly be appreciative of it.

Burrow’s best attributes as a passer are his accuracy, his footwork in the pocket and his ability to fit the ball into tight windows. Green is an imposing physical receiver, who can dominate defensive backs as a volume pass-catcher or burn them over the top with his speed. Though his rapport with Dalton has been tragically understated, he can thrive the second half of his career with Burrow.

While it will be a few years before the Bengals are ready to contend again in the AFC North, this should be an exciting rebuilding team to watch. Cincinnati may only win six or so games next fall, but we’ll surely see the Burrow-to-Green connection come alive when the weather starts to change. Bengals fans and NFL fans at-large have to be excited about this for sure.
