Chicago Bears, NFL Free Agency, Tennessee Titans

Ryan Tannehill to the Bears would make a ton of sense

Ryan Tannehill looks to cash in during his impending free agency. It would make a great deal of sense if he were to go to a team like the Chicago Bears.

What if Ryan Tannehill signed on to quarterback the Chicago Bears?

The impending free agent had a career year last season with the Tennessee Titans. He took over for an ineffective Marcus Mariota mid-season, helping Tennessee make the AFC playoffs, going as far as the AFC Championship game. Tennessee may want him back, but if the Titans have a chance at Tom Brady, then their partnership with Tannehill might have only been a one-year thing.

So why should Tannehill link up with the Bears if he’s not coming back to the Titans in 2020?

Well, he could achieve similar success with the 2020 Bears as he did with the 2019 Titans. Tannehill would theoretically be brought in to back up Mitchell Trubisky, but we all know how that’s going to go. Trubisky will end up filling the Mariota role, whether he’s ready for that or not. Tannehill will be Tannehill, helping this defensive-minded team possibly go on a deep playoff run.

The last few years of Tannehill’s career have shown us what he’s capable of in an excellent NFL offense. He had success playing for Adam Gase with the Miami Dolphins before succumbing to injury. Last season saw him tap into what made him a top-10 pick out of Texas A&M by thriving in Arthur Smith’s Tennessee offense. Chicago has to be intrigued about this newfound Tannehill guy.

See, the Bears are led by an offensive-minded head coach in Matt Nagy. Before arriving in Chicago, he was Andy Reid‘s offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. With Nagy not retaining former Oregon Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich as his offensive coordinator, he opted to bring in former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, who had success with Andy Dalton.

The Bears have roughly $26.3 million in available cap space for 2020. While it is well below the league average of roughly $45.1 million, everybody and their brother knows the Bears can’t roll with just Trubisky in 2020. They need to upgrade the quarterback room beyond Trubisky and Chase Daniel. Adding Tannehill into the fold would certainly do that for the 2020 Bears.

Nagy’s offense takes advantage of a quarterback’s ability to extend plays. Tannehill still moves well in his early 30s. With his ability to accurately throw on the run and being willing to throw the ball down the field, Tannehill could be the offensive upgrade Bears fans are clamoring for. They may not tolerate another season of Trubisky’s yards-per-attempt mirroring his wingspan.
