Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers

Official goes down during 49ers failed game-winning drive

The 49ers couldn’t capitalize after an official going down gave the team extra time in the fourth quarter.

The San Francisco 49ers saw a 14-11 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles vanish in a matter of moments. A Nick Mullens fumble led to an Eagles touchdown drive. Then a Mullens interception was taken to the house to make it 25-14.

Kyle Shanahan then called on C.J. Beathard and the quarterback was able to lead a touchdown drive of his own to make it 25-20. The Eagles punted back to the 49ers with 1:40 remaining in the game and Beathard still in at quarterback.

The 49ers offense got it down to the Eagles’ 33-yard-line when something odd happened. An Eagles defender brushed against a referee who tumbled to the ground. This led to a stoppage in the game and the 49ers were given a bit of a break with under 20 seconds remaining. Was this all some sort of big conspiracy?

49ers can’t capitalize with extra time

The answer is no. The referee quickly got up and regrouped and the delay did not change the fact the 49ers only had a few plays left to score. Two incomplete passes ended the game and we all avoided potential conspiracy theories from Eagles fans directed at the ref who hit the turf.

Eagles fans should finally be happy after the team picked up its first win of the season. 1-2-1 is good enough for first place in the NFC East, providing some silver lining to last week’s painful tie against the Cincinnati Bengals.

A ref taking a bump and a tumble to help the opposition would have been quite the unbelievable end to the game for Philly fans. But the 49ers are still without several key contributors on offense and Beathard could not do enough to bring home the victory.

A win is a win regardless of who lines up at quarterback and Eagles fans finally saw their own signal-caller step up and throw a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. The final score washed away any negativity and Eagles fans can now brag about being in first place, even at 1-2-1.
