Social media went wild after Le’Veon Bell was released
The New York Jets, realizing they have nothing left to play for in 2020 and trying to get out from under Le’Veon Bell’s massive contract, spent the day trying to trade the former All-Pro running back. After failing to do so, Bell has been shown his pink slip.
The Jets decided to release Bell, who liked tweets criticizing head coach Adam Gase’s offensive game-plan, and remain on the hook for $15 million in dead cap.
Le’Veon Bell was thrilled to leave the Jets
Bell’s tweet right after makes it seem like the release was what both parties wanted.
Le’Veon’s Jets career lasted just 18 games, but he did get a cool $28 million out of the arrangement.
Bell, who thrived behind the Pittsburgh Steelers’ standout offensive-line, struggled behind a leaky unit with the Jets
Emmanuel Acho put most of the blame on Gase, who traded Jamal Adams and has done little to develop Sam Darnold.
It appears that letting Mike Maccagnan give Bell that contract before firing him for Joe Douglas was not a great plan for the Jets.
Just two years removed from Bell sitting 2018 out and Antonio Brown’s final year in Pittsburgh, neither of them are employed while the Steelers are undefeated.
Both Bell and Brown were productive, but both of them haven’t been able to replicate that success outside of Pittsburgh.
Potential destinations for Bell are already springing up, with Matt Nagy’s Chicago Bears standing out as one attractive option.
The Chargers, Cardinals, and Seahawks could also work as destinations for Bell.
If Bell wanted to give the Jets the middle finger, he could go sign with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.
Bell will find his next employer soon, but that doesn’t make his release any less shocking.
