The New Orleans Saints are one step closer to getting Michael Thomas back on the field, even if the wide receiver is still dealing with injuries.
Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas hasn’t played for the New Orleans Saints since Week 1, hampered by an ankle injury. So any development putting him closer to the field is a positive one.
On Wednesday, Thomas was suited up for practice, even if he was a limited participant.
The good news? He has been cleared from the disciplinary action stemming from a fight with a teammate. He’s also one week further along in his recovery from a high ankle sprain.
The concerning news? He’s now listed with a hamstring injury as well.
If the latter problem is only a tweak, he could be in line to play on Sunday when the Saints take on the Carolina Panthers at the Superdome.
Michael Thomas’ injury saga has been a pain for the Saints
Thomas might have returned to action against the LA Chargers in Week 5, but any hopes of that were squashed when he allegedly punched Saints safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
New Orleans had a bye following its 30-27 victory over LA, giving Thomas more time to get back in Sean Peyton’s good graces as well as time to get his body right.
Without Thomas, the Saints have turned to running back Alvin Kamara to keep their offense moving. He leads the team in receiving targets, yards and touchdowns in addition to his rushing production.
Aside from Kamara, Emmanuel Sanders has been Drew Brees’ favorite target over the last month. When Thomes returns, he should once against take over as the primary aerial threat for the team.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers top the NFC South, but the Saints and Panthers are both fighting to stay competitive in the division. Sunday’s battle could play a big role in shaping the standings.
