Enjoy Matt Campbell, Iowa State fans, because he’ll be gone in 2021

Matt Campbell is killing it at Iowa State and that means he could be on the move this offseason.

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell has risen from an intriguing MAC offensive mind at Toledo to one of the best young coaches in the country, and his rise to the top continued with another victory against the Big 12’s best.

Campbell’s storybook season continued today against Tom Herman and Texas, as a monumental choke job from the Longhorns allowed Iowa State to hold on for a 23-20 win, pushing them to 7-2 in the unusual 2020 season.

We hope you liked the Campbell era, Cyclones fans because he could be off to a bigger program or the NFL at the end of the year.

Matt Campbell will have Power 5 and NFL interest

Campbell’s 59-32 record at Iowa State may look ordinary, but, when he arrived in Ames and replaced Paul Rhoads, the Cyclones hadn’t had a winning season since 2009, when they went 7-6. The Cyclones hadn’t won eight or more games in a season since 2000. Even with those odds stacked against him, Campbell has led the Cyclones to seven wins in four straight seasons, with this 7-2 stretch so far putting Brock Purdy and Breece Hall in the thick of the Big 12 title race.

While some NFL teams might be scared away by the win-loss record, Matt Rhule had a losing record at Baylor and is excelling with the Carolina Panthers. Kliff Kingsbury was fired at Texas Tech, and he’s crushing it with the Arizona Cardinals. If colleges don’t act fast, Campbell could be off to the pros and following in the footsteps of his former Big 12 enemies.

Campbell has become one of the best coaches in program history, but he has proven to be too good of a coach, as blue bloods like Michigan and NFL teams alike will be trying to get his signature in the coming months.
