NFL teams that should sign Kenny Stills to make a run in the playoffs

The Houston Texans have cut wide receiver Kenny Stills and the NFL rumors are running wild with who could add him for the stretch run.

Kenny Stills was inactive for the Houston Texans due to a quad injury on Thanksgiving Day against the Detroit Lions. On Friday, ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe reported the Texans will cut the veteran wide receiver in what is being described as a “mutual parting.”

In 10 games the Texans this season, Stills had just 11 catches (on 19 targets) for 144 yards and a touchdown. He played just 25 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, with a decreasing role (health aside) in recent weeks. Stills also went public with a negative reaction to the Texans firing PR head Amy Palcic earlier this month, and it’s worth wondering if there are other factors in play.

Stills will go on waivers, and if he’s claimed the team that gets him would assume what’s left of his $6.975 million salary for this year. He’ll be a free agent after the season, so the commitment is small for a receiver who’s averaging 15.6 yards per catch for his career with 37 touchdowns. If he passes through waivers, any team can freely sign him.

Stills is an interesting potential addition for any contending team. On that note, these five teams should be in the mix to secure his services for a playoff run.

5. New England Patriots

When Julian Edelman was healthy earlier in the season, it was him and nothing else for the Patriots at wide receiver. Since he’s been sidelined with a knee injury, it’s been Jakobi Meyers and to a lesser extent Damiere Byrd leading the way.

New England is a spot they haven’t been in for a long time, at 4-6 and on the fringes of the AFC playoff race with the possibility of meaningless December football. The offense has been run-heavy, due in part to what Cam Newton offers with his legs. But any chance to remain in the playoff hunt will rest on being able to threaten defenses downfield. Stills, assuming health, can still be that type of threat.
