Russell Wilson did not sound on board with the decision to fire Brian Schottenheimer.
The Seattle Seahawks seemed shocked last weekend after losing to the Los Angeles Rams. Change was clearly needed, and some may have been surprised by the move that was made.
Brian Schottenheimer is out as offensive coordinator after three seasons. Russell Wilson was asked about the decision and it appears he is not happy at all.
Wilson not happy about the change
Wilson was very straightforward in saying, “No. You ask me am I in favor of it? No,” via The News Tribune. He went on to say he believes Pete Carroll made the decision, which didn’t sound like a slight or an endorsement — just a fact as Wilson is sitting at home while the Divisional Round approaches.
Wilson and Carroll have been together since the 2012 and won the Super Bowl during the 2013 season. Since then, they had the Super Bowl collapse a year later and haven’t been to an NFC Championship Game.
At some point there may need to be a breakup to maximize Wilson’s remaining time in the NFL. He is 32 years old and is under contract through the 2023 season. The team did attempt a rebuild at one point but was able to have enough success to change the plans.
Wilson threw for over 4,000 yards twice in Schottenheimer’s three seasons with the team and had a career-high 40 touchdowns in 2020. The quarterback being so against the firing may indicate he believes Carroll should have been the one to go, even if he is too nice to say that outright.
The entire Seahawks organization has been gliding along on the Super Bowl title for well over a half-decade at this point. If the team wants to contend with Wilson, it may need to make a tough decision next offseason if the final result of the year isn’t a Super Bowl title.
