Kansas City Chiefs fans should be pumped to see this latest stat heading into Super Bowl 55.
The Kansas City Chiefs are less than two weeks away from facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55. Looking to become the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots did so in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. It’s only fitting that the Chiefs look to accomplish this feat against the man who was part of those historic teams — quarterback Tom Brady.
Brady always shines brightest in the playoffs, the Buccaneers actually made it to this point because of their stout defense. Even so, the Chiefs could still have an advantage.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Chiefs have averaged 6.3 yards per play this season, which ranks second in the entire league.
Chiefs offense faces its biggest challenge of season
An offense consisting of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman averaging 6.3 yards per play? Yeah, that checks out.
Kansas City and Tampa Bay did face off against each other back in Week 12, with the Chiefs edging out the 27-24 victory. The Chiefs offense put up 543 yards of offense on 72 plays, giving them an average of 7.5 yards per play. The Buccaneers offense, consisting of Brady, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Ronald Jones, averaged 7.6 yards per play after putting up 417 yards on 55 plays.
In their two playoff games against the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs averaged 438.5 yards of total offense and 30.0 points per game.
But, they face a Buccaneers defense that has surrendered an average of 350.0 yards of offense per game, sacked the opposing quarterback seven times and recorded five interceptions across their three playoff contests against the Washington Football Team, New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers. To make matters much more dire for the Chiefs, they won’t have left tackle Eric Fisher available due to a torn Achilles and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz is doubtful with a back injury.
If there’s any team that can overcome the odds against the Buccaneers defense, it’s the Chiefs. Hey, they did it last year against the San Francisco 49ers. Why not this time around against Tampa Bay?
