It looks as though Urban Meyer is still rounding out his coaching staff and may be looking to steal staff away from rival Jim Harbaugh in the process.
Making his first leap to the NFL, former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer is carefully rounding out his coaching staff for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Though college coaches haven’t typically had much success in the pros, he has a few things like cap space that help his chances. As announcements of his staff selections have started to roll in, he seems to be eyeing the assistance of his longtime college football rival and head coach of the Michigan Wolverines Jim Harbaugh.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Meyer is interviewing Michigan linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary for a position on the Jacksonville Jaguars staff.
Jean-Mary was assumed to be returning to the Maize and Blue next season and has ties to Charlie Strong, Meyer’s linebacker coach, back when they were at Texas. Coincidence? Maybe? Maybe not.
Urban Meyer’s other coaching staff selections so far
After two years as head coach of the South Florida Bulls that didn’t go so well, Charlie Strong took shelter under Nick Saban’s wing as a defensive analyst last season. He now joins his former mentor Meyer in Jacksonville as the linebackers coach for the Jaguars.
Meyer has also tapped former Atlanta Falcons defensive line coach and run-game coordinator Tosh Lupoi to be his new defensive line coach. Lupoi had also spent time with the 2019 Cleveland Browns but is best known for his five years on Saban and Alabama’s football staff from 2014- 2018.
It sure does seem to be a case of a little coaching rivalry at work. If Jean-Mary does end up on Meyer’s staff in Jacksonville, Harbaugh will have to figure out a way to even the score.
