Michigan football: Jim Harbaugh steals new QB coach from brother John Harbaugh and Ravens

Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has hired another former Baltimore Ravens coach away from his older brother John Harbaugh’s NFL staff.

It is apparent Jim Harbaugh wants his Michigan football team to closely resemble his older brother John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens. While the Ravens have been a pillar of excellence in the AFC North for decades, Michigan has never been able to win the Big Ten East since conference realignment.

The younger Harbaugh brother has hired former Ravens running backs coach Matt Weiss to be the Wolverines’ new quarterbacks coach. Baltimore has had a terrific rushing attack the last two years with Lamar Jackson as its quarterback. Weiss reunites with Harbaugh, as he served on his Stanford Cardinal staff a decade ago. So how many ex-Ravens coaches are flocking to Ann Arbor?

Jim Harbaugh has hired Mike Macdonald and Matt Weiss away from the Ravens

Earlier in the offseason, Harbaugh hired former Ravens linebackers coach Mike Macdonald to become one of his two co-defensive coordinators. Macdonald was joined in Ann Arbor by former Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist. Together, they will help revitalize Michigan’s defense that collapsed under former defensive coordinator Don Brown a season ago.

While it makes sense that Harbaugh would hire somebody he is very familiar with, what is peculiar is he hired Weiss to be a Power 5 quarterbacks coach when he had been an NFL running backs coach. This does not exactly breed confidence in Harbaugh’s continued inability to develop a quarterback at Michigan. Here is to either Cade McNamara or J.J. McCarthy running a ton this fall.

A ground-centric attack and defensive-led team may help Michigan beat Ohio State. . .in football.
