NFL rumors: 3 teams that could sign Golden Tate this offseason

Golden Tate is now a free agent. These three teams would be foolish not to consider signing him.

Well, so much for that plan, Dave Gettleman.

According to multiple reports, the New York Giants have released wide receiver Golden Tate. Tate, 32, signed a four-year contract prior to the 2019 season after a midseason trade sent him to the Philadelphia Eagles and the NFC East.

The move creates $6 million in cap space for the Giants, who are looking to get younger at the wide receiver position. It would cost New York a whopping $10 million if he was designated a post-June 1 cut. The former Notre Dame alum was set to make $8.5 million entering the third year of his deal.

There’s no denying that Tate can still be an upside No.3 receiver in the NFL. Last season, he caught 35 passes for 388 yards and two touchdowns, falling behind both Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton.

In the end, he wasn’t worth the massive deal.

At this point in his career, Tate has made enough money to retire. He also has been a Pro Bowler and won a Super Bowl in Seattle. Now, he’s likely looking to win another before he calls it a career.

These three teams definitely fit the criteria.

Los Angeles Rams

NFC West

This one might be a tad off the radar but it certainly would make sense. The Los Angeles Rams traded away Jared Goff, to future first-round picks, and a 2021 third-round selection for the addition of Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions.

Before Tate was struggling to find his rhythm in the Big Apple, he was the security blanket in the Motor City.

Tate and Stafford played together from 2014-18, combining for 4,741 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also helped Stafford and the offense return to the postseason twice. There’s no denying the two had chemistry over their five years together.

The Rams will need a third receiver for 2021 if they lose Josh Reynolds to free agency. The defense ranked No.1 last season and four of the five offensive linemen are set to return next year for Sean McVay’s staff. Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods will command the attention, allowing Tate to work inside as the No.3 or No.4 option behind Van Jefferson.

The Rams need one extra receiver to complete the roster. That’s what Tate basically is at this point in his career.
