Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets

DB Lamarcus Joyner is expected to sign with the Jets

The New York Jets are making moves to sure up their secondary and have secured former Las Vegas Raiders defensive back Lamarus Joyner.

The New York Jets have been adjusting their defense so far in this offseason. Days ago, they agreed to terms on a $45 million deal with Carl Lawson to add some pass rush. On Thursday former outside linebacker Tarell Basham signed with the Dallas Cowboys, giving the Jets one less rusher off the edge.

Now, former Las Vegas Raiders defensive back Lamarcus Joyner will join Gang Green in an attempt to turn their franchise around. Joyner heads to New York on a one-year $4.5 million deal according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Lamarcus Joyner set to return to safety on Jets defense

At 30 years old, Joyner makes his way to the Big Apple having spent his last two seasons with the Raiders after five seasons with the Rams. He started 16 of his 28 games in a Raiders uniform but played nickel the majority of the time under John Gruden’s regime, which was not his preferred position.

He finished the 2020 season with 66 tackles and five passes defended. The Jets were severely lacking in depth at the safety spot with only Marcus Maye, who was franchise tagged last week, and Ashtyn Davis being the only other guys in that spot on the depth chart. The 2014 second-round pick has recorded 420 tackles, four interceptions, five sacks, and 33 pass breakups in his seven-year career.

He’ll look to help bolster the Jets secondary next season.

The Jets now have signed a total of seven free agents from other teams so far this offseason. Corey Davis and slot receiver Keelan Cole ought to help on the offensive side of the ball.

They have the No. 2 overall selection in April’s NFL Draft. Do you see the Jets making any progress next season?
