Todd Gurley’s looming free agency deal was just an April Fools’ joke

Former Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons running back Todd Gurley suggested that he is close to signing with a new team, but it was an April Fools joke.

Despite the flurry of free-agent signings in the first two weeks of the 2021 NFL year, there is still plenty of talent available for the taking. One prominent name on the open market is former Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons running back Todd Gurley, but he teased that would not be for long.

On Thursday, Gurley tweeted that he is “finally about to sign” with a team after a long couple of weeks. Did we mention that Thursday was April Fools’ Day? Because Gurley brought that up with a laughing emoji, but said he is “staying ready” and “working hard.”

Todd Gurley deal not imminent, but he is staying ready for whichever team signs him

This news certainly toyed with fans of Gurley curious to see which team he would sign with for the 2021 season. Based off his reply, a decision is not coming any time soon.

Gurley, the former 2015 first-round selection of the now-Los Angeles Rams, is three seasons removed from winning the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award. After being signed to a $60 million contract extension, Gurley was sidelined toward the end of the 2018 campaign due to knee inflammation and took a backseat to C.J. Anderson. Following the 2019 season, the Rams released Gurley from his contract, making him a free agent.

After his stint in Los Angeles ended, Gurley returned to the Peach State to sign a one-year deal with the Falcons. Through 15 games with the Falcons, Gurley rushed for 678 yards and nine touchdowns on 195 carries (3.5 average yards per carry). Additionally, Gurley caught 25-of-35 targets for 164 yards.

Gurley may not get land a starting role in 2021, but he will certainly have some takers as a rotational back. But thanks to April Fools’ Day, we know a decision from the former three-time Pro Bowler is not imminent.
