New Orleans Saints, NFL Draft

Saints could ‘sneakily’ draft a first-round quarterback this year

The New Orleans Saints could make it six quarterbacks taken in the first round this spring.

While the expectation is that five quarterbacks will go in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, there is a sixth who could be coming off the board in the top 32, possibly going to the New Orleans Saints.

The sixth quarterback in question is Florida’s Heisman Trophy finalist Kyle Trask. While he may be a good fit for the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers picking at No. 32, the Saints are picking ahead of their rival at No. 28 this year.

While ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says the Saints may target Trask with a day-two pick, he may be coming off the board even sooner.

New Orleans Saints have to find Drew Brees’ successor through the draft

With Drew Brees retiring, the Saints have to recognize their future of the quarterback position is not with Taysom Hill, Jameis Winston or with any free agent for that matter. New Orleans needs to identify their long-term answer at the position in the NFL Draft.

While taking Trask in the first 100 picks does not mean he will see the field right away, he does offer NFL teams a lot of promise.

Trask would have no issues serving as a backup to begin his NFL career. He did so in high school backing up current Miami Hurricanes and former Houston Cougars quarterback D’Eriq King. While he was at Florida, Trask backed up several quarterbacks, including most notably Feleipe Franks. So if Trask has to back up Hill, Winston or whoever for a year or so in New Orleans, then so be it.

Taking Trask in first round would be a bit of a reach, but it could pan out for a team like the Saints.
