Kansas City Chiefs, NFL Draft

Watch the Chiefs draft Patrick Mahomes four years ago today (Video)

The Kansas City Chiefs picked Patrick Mahomes No. 10 overall out of Texas Tech four years ago.

By trading up to No. 10 in a deal with the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs forever changed their fortunes by drafting franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech.

It was a move made four years ago today, one that ended up serving both AFC franchises. Buffalo was able to get a defensive cornerstone in cornerback Tre’Davious White at No. 27, as well as the compensation to move up to get linebacker Tremaine Edmunds at No. 16 in 2018. But everybody knows what the best part of the trade was: Mahomes became an NFL superstar for Kansas City.

Here is Mahomes finding out he is going to be the next quarterback of the Chiefs on draft night.

Relive Patrick Mahomes getting drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2017

After backing up Alex Smith and only getting one start as a rookie, Mahomes took over the reins of the Kansas City offense in 2018. He went on to win NFL MVP in his sophomore season. By year three in the league, he was a Super Bowl MVP.

During his fourth season in the league, Mahomes led the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl before falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers down in Tampa.

Ultimately, it is always cool to look back on draft picks that change the course of a franchise’s history. While Kansas City drafted several outstanding hall of fame players before him, none will have the impact of Mahomes, so long as he keeps playing at a high level. Only ascending into his prime, it will be interesting to see how many Lombardi Trophies he can hoist for Kansas City.

Though this pick was awesome in the moment, we had no earthly idea of what was to come.
