Patriots re-sign veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer to 1-year deal

The New England Patriots are not done adding quarterbacks, as they re-signed veteran Brian Hoyer.

If you thought the New England Patriots were done adding quarterbacks after re-signing Cam Newton and drafting Alabama’s Mac Jones, head coach Bill Belichick would like a word. The most active offseason in recent history for the Patriots continues.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Patriots are re-signing veteran Brian Hoyer to a one-year contract.

Patriots: New England re-signs veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer

New England bringing back Hoyer should not come as a shock, as this is an extension to his third stint with the team. He brings familiarity to New England’s quarterback room and has knowledge coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense.

In his 12-year career, Hoyer has thrown for 10,404 yards, 52 touchdowns and 35 interceptions on a 59.2 completion percentage. Hoyer started one game for the Patriots last year, where he completed 15-of-24 pass attempts for 130 yards and one interception in the team’s 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

After missing out on the playoffs last year, the Patriots decided to bolster the talent on their offense, which was incredibly lackluster. That is why they spent huge money on the likes of Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne in free agency. This was a way to provide the quarterback, specifically Newton, with adequate pass-catching options.

Hoyer will obviously not be a threat to Jones, who was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to be the organization’s quarterback of the future. If anything, Hoyer’s presence will spell doom for Jarrett Stidham, the 2019 fourth-round pick out of Auburn who never cracked the top of the quarterback depth chart and appeared sparingly on the field. Of course, we will find out the final answer by the end of training camp.

The Patriots decided that three quarterbacks on the roster was not enough, so they re-signed Hoyer to bring the room to four.
