Baker Mayfield’s agent expects extension from the Browns this summer

Baker Mayfield is in line for a nice contract extension, and his agent expects to get something done with the Browns in short order.

Among 2018 first-round quarterbacks who are in line for a contract extension, Baker Mayfield is a proverbial third wheel behind Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Mayfield has said the right thing about not being in a rush to get a deal done. However, his agent Jack Mills told Tony Grossi of The Land on Demand he expects a deal will get done shortly.

“We’re not going to be dragging it out,” Mills told Grossi. “I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap isn’t going up this year but it’s going up next year and next. We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal.”

The Browns will be betting on Baker Mayfield maintaining his 2020 level

After a rough 2019 campaign, Mayfield rebounded nicely last year under first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski (26 touchdowns, eight interceptions; 62.8 percent completion rate). The Browns also went 11-5, and beat the rival Steelers in the Wild Card Round.

The Browns picked up Mayfield’s fifth-year option for 2022, which keeps him in place for the next two seasons. It’s unlikely, but they could drag things out further via the franchise tag one or two times. While optimistic about getting a deal done for his client, Mills acknowledged the situation is largely in the team’s hands.

“But I think something will be done this summer,” Mills said. “As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control.”
