Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles

Carson Wentz surgery means Eagles already won trade with Colts

The Indianapolis Colts will be without quarterback Carson Wentz for the next five to 12 weeks.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich confirmed on Monday morning that his starting quarterback Carson Wentz will have foot surgery and will miss the next five to 12 weeks of action.

Wentz is having a procedure done on his left metatarsal to “excise the bone.” The former No. 2 overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles was traded to Indianapolis to reunite with his former offensive coordinator this offseason. Wentz has not been the same player since tearing his ACL in Dec. 2017. This trade made by the Colts is already looking like a complete and total disaster.

Look for Wentz to either be back by the start of the regular season or until late October.

This is bad news for the Colts, as Indianapolis will be behind the eight-ball to start the season. The Colts were expected to push for its first AFC South crown since 2014 this season, but may not be able to keep pace with the reigning champion Tennessee Titans if they get off to a bad start without him. For those who wanted to see what Jacob Eason was all about, now is your chance.

Since Indianapolis has a strong roster outside of the quarterback room, it might be time for Colts general manager Chris Ballard to strike up a deal to upgrade this particular position group. Wentz may have been an NFL MVP briefly at one point in his career, but this trade is looking like one that totally blew up in the Colts’ face. So much of the deal was riding on Wentz being able to play a ton.

The Eagles would be getting a first-round pick for Wentz if he plays in 75 percent of the team’s snaps, or 70 percent of their snaps if Indianapolis makes the playoffs. Otherwise, Philadelphia gets a second-round pick in 2022 for their former quarterback. If Wentz needs all three months to heal from his injury, then the Eagles will not able to recoup a precious first-round pick in this trade.

With Wentz out for the preseason at the very least, the Colts have to make another deal quickly.
