Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans

Packers essentially stole a free draft pick from the Texans

The Green Bay Packers got a seventh-round draft pick for free from the Houston Texans.

The Green Bay Packers enter the 2021 season looking like one of the favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl 56. Then, there are the Houston Texans, who may be on track to win the first-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by losing the most games.

These two teams have done business before this offseason via the Randall Cobb trade. But there is one that flew under the radar.

This offseason, the Packers traded cornerback Ka’dar Hollman to the Texans in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. That selection turned out to be free, as Hollman did not make Houston’s 53-man roster.

Shortly after he was cut by the Texans, Hollman signed on with the New Orleans Saints to be a part of their practice squad.

While there are certainly plenty of jokes heading towards the Texans’ way (as has been the case through the past two years), general manager Nick Caserio has no regrets about negotiating the trade with the Packers. He even used a famous Wayne Gretzky quote to further his point.

Sure, it was a seventh-round pick, but the Packers now have even more capital at their disposal entering the 2022 NFL Draft. It certainly helps that the Texans’ pick could be a high seventh-rounder. That is a good thing, especially considering Green Bay may have to build upon their roster without Aaron Rodgers, who could move on from the team after this upcoming season.

The Texans, on the other hand, are going to be under the proverbial microscope for every move they make. That was evidenced after the team traded star wide receiver De’Andre Hopkins for essentially cents on the dollar last year when head coach Bill O’Brien was running the front office. Even though this is a new regime with Caserio and head coach David Culley, this upcoming season is expected to be a rough one for the Texans, who may need all of the draft picks they can get to help build a winning team down the road.
