3 quarterbacks that played like they should be benched in Week 1

While there were some outstanding performances from signal-callers in Week 1, three guys in particular looked nothing short of inconsistent on Sunday.

With the first batch of the NFL games wrapped up on Sunday, there was some amazing performance behind center. Russell Wilson was tremendous, throwing for 254 yards and four scores.

However, there were also some not-so-great performances from quarterbacks. In this piece, we take a look at three signal-callers who really struggled and may end up being benched down the road. The list includes Pittsburgh Steelers veteran Ben Roethlisberger.

3. Ben Roethlisberger

The Pittsburgh Steelers just recorded quite the season-opening win going up against the Buffalo Bills, but boy should Ben Roethlisberger feel lucky about how things played out for him. Plain and simple, Roethlisberger looked very much like a player who turns 40 in March.

To say Roethlisberger’s play was lethargic would be a massive understatement. On the day, Roethlisberger went 18-of-32 for 188 yards and one touchdown. Yes, we understand the Buffalo defense is stingy, but these numbers aren’t anything to write home about.

The main issue with Roethlisberger is that his throws just don’t have the same kind of zip that they used to. He just looked sluggish throughout this contest, which was frustrating to watch for the fans.

Pittsburgh’s defense really stepped up in the 23-16 win, with the special teams unit also blocking a punt and recording a score by Ulysees Gilbert. That gave Pittsburgh a 20-10 lead. Pittsburgh is a team built to compete for a Super Bowl. However, Roethlisberger’s play could end up preventing that from happening. He’s simply got to be better than what we saw on Sunday. If not, could a call to Cam Newton be on the way?
