Former Packers wideout: Aaron Rodgers ‘fought’ for Luke Getsy

Aaron Rodgers reportedly wanted Luke Getsy to stay in Green Bay, per former Packers teammate James Jones. Getsy was hired by the Bears.

I’ll preface this by saying we don’t know how Aaron Rodgers reacted this time around, as for all I know, he could’ve been thrilled to see Getsy walk out the door to the rival Chicago Bears.

However, that feels incredibly unlikely due to his previous reaction to Getsy. James Jones, a former wideout for the Packers and teammate of Rodgers, stated that back when he was in Green Bay, No. 12 would consistently back Getsy.

“I’ve been in there with Luke. Luke was on the staff when I was with the Packers. And…boy was Aaron Rodgers fighting for this boy to be the OC. You know what I’m saying? He was fighting for Luke to be the OC. So when I seen this hire, I was like ‘Oh wee, that is excellent for Justin Fields,’” Jones said on The Ringer NFL Show.

Did Packers consult Aaron Rodgers before letting Luke Getsy leave?

As it turns out, the Packers might not have had complete control of the situation anyway. Getsy wanted complete control of the Bears offense, which new head coach Matt Eberflus was willing to give him. In Chicago, Getsy will have to opportunity to work with a young quarterback in Justin Fields, and hopefully lead the Bears offense for years to come if everything works out.

In Green Bay, he would’ve been stuck as an offensive coordinator by name only, as Matt LaFleur calls a large portion of the plays, and Rodgers can often get the final say. In Chicago, Getsy has the opportunity to mold an offense to his liking.

So, as convenient as it would’ve been for Rodgers to have limited turnover in an offseason where he’s deciding on his Packers future, it turns out the franchise didn’t have much of a leg to stand on.
