Buffalo Bills, NFL Free Agency, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Could Rob Gronkowski be headed to the Buffalo Bills?

Rob Gronkowski could look to play for his hometown Buffalo Bills in 2022 NFL free agency.

With Tom Brady having retired from football, that means Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent tight end Rob Gronkowski could look to join his third NFL team: The Buffalo Bills.

Tim Graham of The Athletic reports “that if Gronkowski wants to keep playing, the Bills still are open to adding the Amherst, New York native to their offense.”

If Gronkowski were to go to the Bills in his free agency, he would be presumably Buffalo’s second tight end to Dawson Knox. With Gronkowski on the wrong side of 30, he is no longer viewed as a No. 1 tight end on a good team’s roster anyway, week in and week out. Still, Gronkowski would be adding a championship pedigree to a quality Bills roster hoping to get back to the Super Bowl.

What are the chances the Bills add the free agent future hall of fame tight end in NFL free agency?

Rob Gronkowski free agency rumors: Gronk would entertain playing for Bills

At this point of his career, Gronkowski has only played for teams that Brady has quarterbacked: The Buccaneers in the last two seasons and the New England Patriots upon being drafted out of Arizona. Though Gronkowski is football-savvy enough to fit into any offense, the move to Buffalo is all about what he thinks of quarterback Josh Allen and new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.

Allen is a top-five quarterback in the league today, so his level of play should not be an issue for a professional like Gronkowski. However, Dorsey is taking over a Bills offense that had risen to prominence under his predecessor Brian Daboll. Given that Bills head coach Sean McDermott specializes on the defensive side of the ball, this is where the potential issues lie for the move.

Ultimately, Gronkowski can pick and choose where he wants to play. If he wants to suit up for his hometown team, the Bills would have to clear some cap space to be able to land him, as they are in the red in that department heading into the new league year. Gronkowski may retire for a second time, but if he is not playing with Brady, then he may come home to Western New York.

If Gronkowski leaves Tampa Bay in his free agency, let’s hope he goes to a contender like Buffalo.
