Tyrann Mathieu appears to take a shot at the Chiefs on Twitter

Tyrann Mathieu does not appear to be on the best of terms with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite being a tremendously important part of their defense the last three years, it seems as though a fracture has emerged between superstar safety Tyrann Mathieu and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mathieu is about to enter 2022 NFL free agency. While the cash-strapped Chiefs could find a way to pay Mathieu, they prioritized bringing back offensive tackle Orlando Brown over him. Though Mathieu probably would have hated being slapped with the franchise tag, there is a very real possibility Mathieu has played his last down for the Chiefs. They are over $5 million in the hole.

With an NSFW quote tweet of former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner’s remarks about his former employer not even telling him that he was cut, clearly, Mathieu relates to the perennial All-Pro’s mounting sense of frustration.

The 2022 NFL campaign will be Mathieu’s age-30 season out of LSU. Youth may no longer be on his side, but if he has another two or three years up to his standard, he will be Canton bound. The question remains if he will playing for the Chiefs going forward. While fences can be mended in the coming days and weeks, Mathieu has to take advantage of possibly his last big pay day in the NFL.

With the flurry of moves other division rivals have made this week, most notably, the Denver Broncos trading for Russell Wilson and the Los Angeles Chargers dealing for Khalil Mack, there are no guarantees the Chiefs will win the AFC West going away again next year. Though the Las Vegas Raiders probably pull back, all four teams in this division have what it takes to make the playoffs.

Ultimately, the Chiefs look to be up against it with the salary cap. Though they could extend Tyreek Hill or possibly restructure or flat-out release Frank Clark, Kansas City general manager Brett Veach will have to do some major salary cap gymnastics to make the dollars and cents make sense. Unfortunately, this could end up costing them an elite playmaker in The Honey Badger.

Mathieu’s passive aggressive tweet only signifies how frustrated he is with NFL free agency.
