Steelers sign Ben Roethlisberger replacement in Mitch Trubisky, Twitter reacts

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed a replacement for now-retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in former Bears, Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Pittsburgh needed some answer at quarterback this offseason, and they’ve got it thanks to a two-year deal handed to former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky was dubbed an NFL Draft bust in Chicago, but perhaps too soon. Stuck with Matt Nagy as an offensive mind, Trubisky was up-and-down in his four years with the Bears.

However, Pittsburgh is choosing to look at the bright side — Trubisky made a Pro Bowl in 2018 with Chicago, and reportedly impressed in Buffalo as Josh Allen’s backup. Perhaps he learned something from Brian Daboll, who has a great track record himself as an offensive coordinator.

The Steelers gave Trubisky a two-year contract. We’re still waiting on the terms.

To be fair, Pittsburgh sports fans don’t have much of a right to be upset. He’s technically an upgrade over Mason Rudolph.

However, when considering the rest of the division, the Steelers are pretty clearly fourth tier at signal-caller.

For the most part, Steelers fans welcomed Trubisky to Pittsburgh with open arms.

Grade for Steelers signing Mitchell Trubisky: B

When you consider the options at hand, the Steelers were never going to trade three first-round picks and more for the likes of Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson. It’s not Kevin Colbert’s style.

Pittsburgh needed an upgrade over Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins, and technically they got that on an affordable, short-term contract. This doesn’t have implications for their future, either.

Technically, the Steelers could still be in play for Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett or any of the rookie quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft class — and they probably should be.

Trubisky serves as a bridge quarterback, at worst. At best, he’s young enough to lead a career turnaround in the style of Ryan Tannehill.

The Steelers will sign up for that right now.
