Patrick Mahomes opens up about bad play in loss to Bengals

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes divulges that his worst playoff football was played against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship.

Patrick Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs all the way to the AFC Championship since 2018, a statistic that illustrates his AFC dominance.

But the Chiefs didn’t advance to the Super Bowl in each of those seasons: in 2018 and 2021, Kansas City lost the conference and watched their opponent advance to the big game.

Mahomes played an incredible game against the New England Patriots that ended in a close overtime loss, but their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this January is something that still bothers the heralded Chiefs quarterback.

Mahomes isn’t the only one who believes KC could have won that game: Arrowhead Addict described the 27-24 loss as a “complete meltdown.”

After the Chiefs took an early lead in the first half, the team failed to score in the red zone on a first-and-goal before halftime. Here’s how that second half that Mahomes alluded to actually went:

  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Interception
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Field Goal
  • Interception

Joe Burrow and the Bengals were able to make a miraculous 21-3 comeback, almost in the same vein Mahomes has done throughout his NFL career. Unfortunately, Mahomes watched as the opposing team accomplished the impossible as the Chiefs languished.

Understandably, it’s something that still haunts Mahomes, especially when that game dashed Super Bowl dreams after a deflating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.

Patrick Mahomes believes the Bengals playoff loss was his “worst playoff football”

Ironically, Mahomes’ comments were made on the same day that Chiefs podcaster Taylor Witt shared some numbers that has fans reveling in Mahomes’ second-half magic.

Witt dug into some impressive stats that conclude that Mahomes is the least likely to be down in three quarters and the most likely to come back in the fourth.

The Bengals game may have not been Mahomes’ best game, but the iconic Chiefs quarterback is still building a legacy that will go down as one of the greatest in NFL history.
