As the Jets hope that 2022 will be the year Zach Wilson finally takes flight, something else already has: the rumor that Wilson’s relationship ended as a result of an affair with his mom’s best friend.

With next to literally nothing to talk about in regards to actual football around this time of year, most NFL fans are willing to over-invest in nearly any news that comes about involving the league. If, however, you are in the minority or — like Wilson supposedly did — had crappy cell service over the past 24 hours, here’s a brief recap:
Zach Wilson’s ex-girlfriend, Abbey Gile, started dating Washington Commanders wide receiver Dax Milne, who is Wilson’s best friend from college. When someone called her a “homie hopper” for “hopping” from Wilson to his best friend, Wilson’s ex blamed their breakup publicly, on Instagram, on the fact that Wilson supposedly slept with his mom’s friend.
It sounds like the plot to a messy episode of a teen drama from 2009, but as far as we know, this is real life. Wilson himself didn’t even technically deny it in his own Instagram post. Wilson is now linked to New Jersey-based influencer Nicolette Dellanno.
As far as how this effects the Jets, the truth is that it doesn’t. The fans couldn’t have hoped for a better response from Wilson. The last thing that a young quarterback needs is personal drama spilling into the public sphere and serving as a locker room distraction. While the context of his response was totally vanilla in a time where anything can be made exciting among bored football fans, the way he went about making it was comical.
