Jets must put Zach Wilson in a giant bubble after hopeful injury update

Zach Wilson did not suffer a season-ending knee injury in the New York Jets’ preseason game.

While he will be sidelined for the time being, New York Jets fans have to be ecstatic over the great news surrounding Zach Wilson’s injury knee.

The second-year pro and former No. 2 overall pick out of BYU had to leave the Jets’ first preseason game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles prematurely after tweaking his knee on a scramble to the right. There was some belief that he may have torn his ACL in the process. While there have been major advances in modern medicine, it still means season over for any, and all, professional athletes.

Fortunately, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that Wilson only suffered a bone bruise and a meniscus tear in his knee.

He will have surgery on the meniscus tear, which will determine how long he could be out. It could be as short as two weeks, or as long as a month.

Here is the play where Wilson hurt his knee in Friday night’s preseason game vs. Philadelphia.

Where do the Jets go from here to get into the regular season with as few injuries as possible?

Zach Wilson injury update: New York Jets quarterback depth chart

Per OurLads, here is how the Jets’ quarterbacking depth chart looks after one preseason game.

  1. Zach Wilson
  2. Joe Flacco
  3. Mike White
  4. Chris Streveler

With two more preseason games left and the regular season just shy of a month out, there is a strong possibility Wilson is ready to start Week 1 vs. the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 11. In the meantime, let’s get ready for Joe Flacco to remain forever elite and for Mike White lightning to get even more run for Gang Green. He was absolutely electrifying vs. the Cincinnati Bengals last year.

While it is great to know that Wilson’s season did not end before it even began, this is a critical year for not only him as a starting quarterback, but for second-year head coach Robert Saleh. New York should be slightly better than it was a year ago. The Jets will still finish in last place in the AFC East, but they could push for .500 if everything comes up aces for this long-moribund franchise.

A reason people have some optimism surrounding the Jets is the fine job Joe Douglas has done as general manager. He has made good decisions in recent drafts and that is how bad teams become good in the salary cap era of the NFL: You win through the draft. However, Wilson must take great strides in year two to not be replaced in a deep quarterback draft. Saleh has to be way better, too.

Football is a game of injuries, but New York should be thanking its lucky stars for Wilson’s health.
