Cowboys rumors: Dallas ruling out big replacement options after Dak Prescott injury

For Dallas Cowboys fans expecting the team to make a play for a starting quarterback to fill-in for Dak Prescott, it’s time to end the dream.

The Dallas Cowboys‘ season has gotten off to the worst start imaginable. The offense already struggled in the season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and then starting quarterback Dak Prescott left the game with what was revealed to be a fractured right thumb, and will be sidelined for multiple weeks.

For Cowboys fans wanting the team to make a move for a big quarterback with Prescott sidelined, don’t count on it.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are not planning to pursue “a significant trade for a quarterback barring an unforeseen change.” Fowler brings up that Prescott’s timeline for a return as a reason, in addition to backup Cooper Rush having a familiarity with the team’s offense.

Cowboys reportedly not expected to pursue significant trade for QB with Dak Prescott sidelined

The Cowboys did receive some favorable news in regards to when Prescott could return. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Prescott underwent successful surgery on his thumb and could return for the team’s Oct. 30 game against the Chicago Bears, or the Nov. 13 game against the Green Bay Packers following their bye.

While Prescott could return at the midway point of the season, there is a likelihood that the team could be far out of the NFC East chase. They are the only team in the division to lose in Week 1, and they have to play the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants in Prescott’s absence. That, and they have to play the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams.

In Week 2 against the Bengals, Rush will start his second career game. His first career start occurred in the 2021 season against the Minnesota Vikings, where he completed 24-of-40 pass attempts for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the 20-16 win.

The Cowboys are going to ride things out, but it will be interesting to see if they do change their plans if the losses pile up.
