NFL Power Rankings: How tall are these Giants?

The New York Giants are 5-1 on the season after their huge come from behind win over the Baltimore Ravens. But where do they stand in the NFL power rankings?

Every single NFL season, there are teams where fans and experts are not necessarily shocked by how well they have performed early in the season. But then, there are teams that surprise absolutely everyone with an impressive start to their campaign.

In 2022, the New York Giants are that team.

The Giants did not have the greatest of rosters overall, considering they were left in cap hell by former general manager Dave Gettleman. The team hired former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen to replace him, and he brought along offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to be the new Giants head coach. Daboll, along with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale, have these players believing in themselves and performing above and beyond their expectations.

New York defeated the Tenessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, and the Green Bay Packers to get off to a 4-1 start, with their lone loss being against the Dallas Cowboys. But in Week 6, the Giants pulled off yet another shocker, beating the Baltimore Ravens.

Down 20-17 with over six minutes remaining, safety Julian Love picked off a pass thrown by quarterback Lamar Jackson and returned it to Baltimore’s own 13 yard line. Three plays later, the Giants took a 24-20 lead after a one-yard touchdown run by Saquon Barkley.

Baltimore had over a minute remaining and all three timeouts at their disposal to try and score a touchdown to get the win. But Jackson gave up the football after getting strip-sacked by rookie linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, allowing Leonard Williams to recover. The Giants killed off the clock to secure the win.

After the game, Thibodeaux was in tears as he celebrated the Giants’ fifth victory of the season.

The Giants are 5-1 on the season. But do they stand tall in the power rankings? Here is a look at how the rankings shape out following the early slate of games on Sunday.

NFL Power Rankings: Giants rise up the ranks

5

New York Giants 5-1

This is a resilient football team that can not be ignored much longer. They do not have the best overall roster, but they have the coaching that gets the most out of every player. The Giants cannot be counted out late in games, as evidenced by their win over the Ravens, where it looked like they were heading towards their second loss of the season.

New York could be near the top of the power rankings for a while, as their next four opponents on the schedule are the Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, and Detroit Lions. These are winnable games.

Brian Daboll is trending towards matching Joe Judge’s win total (10) in his first year with the team. Coaching matters. It is as simple as that.

The Giants faithful have waited five years for meaningful football, and they finally have it, and it is glorious.

4

Minnesota Vikings 5-1

We now move onto another team with a first-year head coach making a difference.

The Minnesota Vikings hired Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to lead their team. So far, he is doing a good job with this Vikings team. They are winning the games they are supposed to win.

In Week 6, the Vikings picked up a 24-16 win over a Miami Dolphins team that relied upon Skylar Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback.

Now, the Vikings have a commanding lead in the NFC North, as the Green Bay Packers lost to a New York team for the second week in a row, falling 27-10 to the Jets.

3

Kansas City Chiefs 4-1

As long as the Kansas City Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, they are always going to be Super Bowl contenders.

Their one lone loss of the season shockingly came against the Indianapolis Colts, but they had some clutch wins over the Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders this season.

In Week 6, they take on the Buffalo Bills, who entered the season as Super Bowl favorites.

2

Buffalo Bills 4-1

The Buffalo Bills are expected to be in contention for the Super Bowl this season, and so far, they look to be in good shape.

They started off the season defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, after all. They had commanding wins over the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers, and a come from behidn win over the Ravens. Their lone loss of the seaon entering Week 6 was to the Miami Dolphins, where the clock ran out on them just before the team had a chance to win the game.

The Bills face the Chiefs, looking to get payback for their playoff eliminations the previous two years.

1

Philadelphia Eagles 5-0

The lone undefeated team entering Week 6 deserves the top spot on the power rankings list. The Philadelphia Eagles were among the most active teams this offseason, where they drastically improved their defense and added another pass catching option for quarterback Jalen Hurts in A.J. Brown. Sure enough, a perfect 5-0 through the first five games of the season.

Philadelphia does face a true test in Week 6, as they host the Dallas Cowboys, with the winner earning first place in the NFC East.
