Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl

How many players have won NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same year?

Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP after Super Bowl 57 and just days after winning NFL MVP. How many players have done that in history?

Apparently, Patrick Mahomes only needs one ankle to etch his name in history. Because that’s what he did on Sunday night in Super Bowl 57.

Playing through a high-ankle sprain suffered in the Divisional Round, Mahomes orchestrated a Kansas City Chiefs second-half comeback after the Eagles were up by 10 points at halftime to earn his second Super Bowl victory in his career.

Naturally, after throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for 50+ yards in the win, Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP. And this came just days after the NFL Honors ceremony where the Chiefs quarterback was awarded NFL MVP as well.

That’s a rare feat, without question, having not been accomplished in nearly 25 years. But just how rare is it? Here’s the company Patrick Mahomes just joined.

How many players have won NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same year?

With Mahomes doing the double after the Chiefs win on Sunday night, there are now seven quarterbacks in NFL history who have taken home NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP honors in the same season.

Kurt Warner was the last to do it back in 1999 with the then-St. Louis Rams. Before him, the others to accomplish the impressive feat were Brett Favre (1996), Steve Young (1994), Joe Montana (1989), Terry Bradshaw (1978) and Bart Starr (1966).

Mahomes now adding his name to this list at just 27 years old and while winning his second Super Bowl ring is impressive. Now you have to wonder if this will be the last time he does this, or if he can become the first player in NFL history to win both awards in the same season twice.
