NFL rumors: Ezekiel Elliott’s rumored suitor is ultimate Cowboys betrayal

The Dallas Cowboys could lose Ezekiel Elliott to the Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals or New York Jets, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

While Ezekiel Elliott did average under four yards per carry last season — a surprisingly-disappointing display from the former All-Pro — Dallas didn’t consider the revenge factor when they cut him loose.

Elliott has narrowed his options down to three teams. While he will have to take on less money in order to do so, Zeke can sign with a contender, which is reportedly his top priority. Elliott is down to the Eagles, Jets and Bengals, per Adam Schefter.

While he’s been in the league long enough to make over $70 million, Elliott is still only 27 years old. There’s a chance he still has something left in the tank, especially if he receives less reps than he’s accustomed to.

NFL rumors: Could former Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott sign with the Eagles

Dallas rode Elliott like a bell-cow back for years. He earned that label, too, winning a Rookie of the Year award, making three Pro Bowls and an All-Pro team. He was a legitimate star for the Cowboys. But he’s not that player anymore, and he knows it.

If Elliott is smart, he’ll sign with a team where he can achieve his ultimate goal — playing in the postseason and winning a Super Bowl. Doing so in Philadelphia would be sweet revenge for Elliott, though he doesn’t strike us as that kind of player.

Jerry Jones treated Elliott like a son, even on his way out. Jones thank Zeke for his time in Dallas. For all we know, a reunion could come some day down the line.

Signing in Philadelphia is the ultimate form of betrayal. It’s an act that is hard to take back, even as one of several in a crowded Philly backfield.

There’s no doubt Elliott would contribute with the Eagles. But is it really worth angering the largest fanbase in sports?
